Stories for Single Women
Simple Worship

Placing one ¼ inch heel shoe on the ground, Laura noticed a young man collecting shopping carts in the parking lot. Planting her other elegant shoe on the asphalt, she stood, unsure whether to close the door or re-enter the car and leave.

“Praise God for life and waking me up this morning,” he smiled. “Halleluiah, praise His holy name.”

Laura hesitated, nodding her acknowledgement and agreement with his words. Closing the door, she looked at him warily. She assessed his speech and demeanor. He was slender, with a couple of pimples on his face. The words he spoke were slurred and deliberate.

“He's a little slow,” she thought. “He is not a weirdo.” She gave him a genuine smile.

Walking into the supermarket, she marveled at the freedom with which the young man praised and worshipped God.

“Why is it that someone who is slow is so free with his worship of the Lord?” she wondered.

Laura walked toward the freezers first. She removed a pint of Ben and Jerry's Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough ice cream. Turning, she looked into the blue eyes of a toddler. She smiled at him as she walked past, nodding to his mother. Passing the beef, pork and lamb display, she strolled toward the salad bar.

“Thank you Father for waking me up this morning. Thank you for the life you have given me. I forgot what a privilege it is to be. Thanks for creating me.”

Slowing her pace, she came to the seafood display. “The shrimp and cod look fresh,” she thought. Shaking her head she continued toward the salad bar.

“Halleluiah,” she repeated the young man's words in her head, “praise His holy name.”

Lighthearted, she reached the salad bar and assessed her options. Removing a square plastic container, she created a purple, green, orange, red and white masterpiece.

“Praise God for life and waking me up this morning,” she repeated. “Halleluiah, praise Your holy name.”

Walking toward the check out lanes she continued to think of the simple young man and smiled.

“Thank you for his example Lord.”

She paid for her items and walked toward the exit. Two elderly women were discussing the increasing price of food.

“Please provide for them Lord as they attempt to live on a fixed income,” she thought.

Stepping out the door, she noticed the young man coming toward her.

“God bless you,” he said and waved as he walked by.

“And you too.” Laura beamed as she walked toward her car praising the name of the Lord.

Adoration can occur in every mundane activity of life.

“I will bless the LORD at all times; his praise shall continually be in my mouth.” Psalm 34:1 KJV
