Stories for Single Women
A Desire of the Heart

Nancy jabbed at the women to her left, her eyes fixed forward. Following Nancy's gaze, Cindy observed with disgust the behavior of the couple sitting in the pew in front of her.

“What ever happened to No PDA?” Cindy whispered to her friend.

No PDA?” Nancy inquired.

“No public display of affection.”

“Oh, yeah. This is more than PDA though, they need to go home, ” she exaggerated.

“You'd think they would know better than to do that here, of all places. It's inappropriate.”

Sighing, Nancy nodded agreement. She wiggled deeper into her seat and tried to focus on the words of the pastor. Her eyes kept straying to the amorous couple. Thick brown hair snuggled into a pale, hairless neck. A masculine arm surrounded delicate shoulders, the hand with a thick gold ring prominent on the marriage finger settling just above a small elbow.

“Where's my masculine arm, God?” Nancy queried God, the air around her becoming chilly and light. The seat to her right seemed to shout, “I'm empty!”

“Well, I do have Cindy,” she reminded herself. “And You have blessed me with many good and faithful friends,” she continued in her thoughts.

A tear found its way into Nancy's right eye. “I know I have you Lord and you are all I need.” Bending down, Nancy retrieved her purse and removed a tissue.

“I know this truth,” she thought, “but it's not enough”. Gently she shared her desire with the Lord, “I want someone to walk along side with, Lord.”

“You have Me by your side Nancy.”

“I know, but I want to snuggle into a neck and know what it's like to have a masculine arm lovingly surround my shoulders. I want the privilege of serving another and serving with another. I can't snuggle into your neck, Lord.”

The man in front of her kissed the forehead of the woman next to him. The mouth of the pastor moved, but Nancy did not hear what he said. The pulpit was silver and shimmering.

Placing her hand on Cindy's shoulder she asked, “Do you wish it were you?”

Cindy hesitated, then nodded her head, “Yes, I do.”

Looking into each other's eyes, they shared feeble smiles. Cindy wrapped her arms tightly around her abdomen. Nancy retrieved another tissue from her purse.

“My God shall supply all of my needs according to His riches and His glory in Christ Jesus,” Nancy whispered to herself as she sat forward in her seat, focusing on the words of her pastor.

The desires of our heart can draw us closer to our Lord if we yield our desires to Him.

“You open Your hand and satisfy the desire of every living thing.” Psalm 145:16 NKJV
