Stories for Single Women
We Don't Have To Do It On Our Own

Baffled, Cynthia looked at the knob she was attempting to place on her bathroom door. “Now why won't this lock,” she muttered, her eyebrows furrowing as she opened and closed the door testing her handiwork.

Cynthia prided herself on her independence. Whatever task she set her mind to, she usually succeeded. This doorknob frustrated her because she could not figure out how to place it to lock properly. Resigned, she put the screwdriver on the sink, washed her hands and left the bathroom. She would return after she had given herself time away from the project.

Walking into her kitchen, the pre-dusk orange sunlight filtering through floral curtains hanging from the windows, Cynthia noticed two birds building a nest. They were about a women's hands width in length, gray with blue stripes on each side. As one bird searched for a bit of twig, a piece of grass, or a wisp of old yarn, probably from someone's trash can, the other laid their treasures on the nest forming their concaved circular home. “Amazing how they work together,” she mused, taking raw spinage, feta cheese, olives, fresh vegetables and raspberry vinaigrette out of her refrigerator. “Lord, you are so wonderful. Thanks for letting me see how your creation works.”

She ate her salad, thinking, praying, and reflecting on the birds building their home together. Afterwards, she rinsed her dishes, placed them in the dishwasher and returned to the bathroom to finish her task.

As Cynthia picked up the screwdriver she remembered the two birds. She let the cool silver tool roll back and forth on the palm of her elegant hand. Minutes later, she placed it on the sink and walked into her bedroom. Picking up the phone, she dialed. “Hello Sam? Hi, it's Cynthia. You're a carpenter right? How about sharing your skill with me? I need help putting a knob on my bathroom door.”

The Body of Christ is the place where we receive encouragement and strength.

“Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all, especially to those who are in the household of faith.” Galatians 6:10 NKJV
