God Most HighTrue Worship by J. Ross Greer of The Place of Grace Ministries (about the ministry) [Note: If you'd like to read more from J. Ross Greer, be sure to subscribe to his daily e-mail list A Word For The Church.] 17Then after his return from the defeat of Chedorlaomer and the kings who were with him, the king of Sodom went out to meet him at the valley of Shaveh (that is, the King's Valley). 18And Melchizedek king of Salem brought out bread and wine; now he was a priest of God Most High. 19He blessed him and said, "Blessed be Abram of God Most High, Possessor of heaven and earth; 20And blessed be God Most High, Who has delivered your enemies into your hand." He gave him a tenth of all. 21The king of Sodom said to Abram, "Give the people to me and take the goods for yourself." 22Abram said to the king of Sodom, "I have sworn to the LORD God Most High, possessor of heaven and earth, 23that I will not take a thread or a sandal thong or anything that is yours, for fear you would say, 'I have made Abram rich.' 24"I will take nothing except what the young men have eaten, and the share of the men who went with me, Aner, Eshcol, and Mamre; let them take their share." Through Abraham's encounter with Melchizedek, we find God to be revealed as El Elyon, the God Most High. Much of our worship hinges upon what we know about our Father. El Elyon is the possessor of heaven and earth. He is sovereign and in control of all the events that occur in our world. Every Sadaam and Osama in this world can do no more than what God permits. They are nothing more than players in the plan of God. Therefore, worship can flow form our lips because we know that God in still on the throne. He knows what we are experiencing and is present with us to see us through each trial El Elyon also delivers enemies into our hands. God is the one who fights our battles. Ephesians 6 instructs us to put on our spiritual armor and then stand and pray. Therefore, we can give praise to God because our battles belong to Him. He will defend and protect us against all of our enemies. "I cannot. He never said I could. He can. He always said He would." (Ian Thomas) What was Abram's response? Abram worshipped El Elyon by giving Him a tenth of all the spoils he had captured. Should we not worship our God Most High in the same fashion?
