No Other GodsTrue Worship by J. Ross Greer of The Place of Grace Ministries (about the ministry) [Note: If you'd like to read more from J. Ross Greer, be sure to subscribe to his daily e-mail list A Word For The Church.] 1Then God spoke all these words, saying, 2"I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery. 3"You shall have no other gods before Me. 4"You shall not make for yourself an idol, or any likeness of what is in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the water under the earth. 5"You shall not worship them or serve them; for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children, on the third and the fourth generations of those who hate Me, 6but showing lovingkindness to thousands, to those who love Me and 7"You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain, for the LORD will not leave him unpunished who takes His name in vain. "I am the LORD your God." God identifies Himself as Yahweh everything they and we would ever need. He is our one and only true focus of worship. "You shall not make for yourself an idol." No problem, right? Have you made an idol of a music style? In other words, do you think that you can only worship when your worship leader selects music that you like? Is that not an idol? Is that not a flesh focus? "I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God." God will not share His worship with anyone or anything else. When we gather for worship, God wants our full attention upon Him, and not upon who is (or is not) singing, or whether the musicians are playing the hippest music. "You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain." To sing "Oh, How I Love Jesus" with our lips, while our minds are on anything else but Him, is to take His name in vain. That worship is not acceptable in the eyes of the Father. We must be very careful to guard our worship of the Father. We need to make sure our words direct praise to God. We must be certain that our minds are thinking only about Him. He knows when our worship is fleshly. We cannot hide from the Father those times when our thoughts dwell on our problems and ourselves. Think on God and God alone!
