GiveTrue Worship by J. Ross Greer of The Place of Grace Ministries (about the ministry) [Note: If you'd like to read more from J. Ross Greer, be sure to subscribe to his daily e-mail list A Word For The Church.] 1Now after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, magi from the east arrived in Jerusalem, saying, 2Where is He who has been born King of the Jews? For we saw His star in the east and have come to worship Him. 9After hearing the king, they went their way; and the star, which they had seen in the east, went on before them until it came and stood over the place where the Child was. 10When they saw the star, they rejoiced exceedingly with great joy. 11After coming into the house they saw the Child with Mary His mother; and they fell to the ground and worshiped Him. Then, opening their treasures, they presented to Him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. Magi, or wise men, embark on a two-year journey from their home in the east to Jerusalem for one purpose to worship the King of the Jews. How did they prepare for this worship experience? We can only imagine the servants and supplies that must have been gathered for such a long journey. We have to pack half of our houses to take a week's vacation. We usually plan our routes to the last detail. All they had was a star to follow. They also packed gifts, very costly gifts, to present to the One whom they came to worship. Understand that these men were not of Jewish descent. They were wise men, probably astrologers, who has studied the scripture so as know that Micah 5:2 prophesied that the Messiah would be born in Bethlehem. So, why the gifts? Would their long journey and visit not be enough to satisfy this young King? These wise men (more than three) understood that giving was an integral part of worship. Therefore, they gave gifts worthy of a King. When we worship, what are we to give to Him? First, we must give all of ourselves, then our time, talents, and treasure. If we are to truly worship the Father, everything must be yielded to Him for His kingdom purposes.
