Psalm 96:1 – 13 (NASB)

1Sing to the LORD a new song; Sing to the LORD, all the earth. 2Sing to the LORD, bless His name; Proclaim good tidings of His salvation from day to day. 3Tell of His glory among the nations, His wonderful deeds among all the peoples. 4For great is the LORD and greatly to be praised; He is to be feared above all gods. 5For all the gods of the peoples are idols, But the LORD made the heavens. 6Splendor and majesty are before Him, Strength and beauty are in His sanctuary. 7Ascribe to the LORD, O families of the peoples, Ascribe to the LORD glory and strength. 8Ascribe to the LORD the glory of His name; Bring an offering and come into His courts. 9Worship the LORD in holy attire; Tremble before Him, all the earth. 10Say among the nations, “The LORD reigns; Indeed, the world is firmly established, it will not be moved; He will judge the peoples with equity.” 11Let the heavens be glad, and let the earth rejoice; Let the sea roar, and all it contains; 12Let the field exult, and all that is in it. Then all the trees of the forest will sing for joy 13Before the LORD, for He is coming, For He is coming to judge the earth. He will judge the world in righteousness And the peoples in His faithfulness.

Sing TO the LORD. While our songs may not be vertically directed in their wording, our hearts and our minds must be focused upon the One to whom our worship is due. If we dwell, rather, upon what we like or want in the worship service, then true worship will not occur.

******

Proclaim, tell, ascribe are all verbs of action, which gives us the indication that we are to be active in our worship. Individually and corporately, we are declaring to all who hear us the greatness of the character and works of our God.

******

If you ever are at a loss as how to worship God, this psalm will give you some direction. Sing or speak about His salvation, how it has transformed your life and your eternity. Tell of all that God has done and is doing in your life. Demonstrate by your life and declare with your words that He is to be reverenced or feared. Specifically proclaim God's attributes – holiness, righteousness, justice, love, mercy, grace, sovereignty, immutability, omniscience, omnipresence, omnipotence, to name a few.

******

State with conviction that is God and God alone who created this world and each person in it and that He is coming again in the person of Jesus Christ to judge the world in perfect and just righteousness. When we worship God as He deserves, when we declare His glory to all people, then the unsaved will hear the truth and be convicted by it.

About The Place of Grace Ministries: In 1992, God interrupted the well-organized life of J. Ross Greer through a study called "Experiencing God". This encounter birthed a passionate vision for local churches that has become The Place of Grace Ministries. Through teaching, music, and writing, we call believers to return to the basic principles of God's Word and participate in the work of God.
