Psalm 29:1 – 11 (NASB)

1Ascribe to the LORD, O sons of the mighty, Ascribe to the LORD glory and strength. 2Ascribe to the LORD the glory due to His name; Worship the LORD in holy array. 3The voice of the LORD is upon the waters; The God of glory thunders, The LORD is over many waters. 4The voice of the LORD is powerful, The voice of the LORD is majestic. 5The voice of the LORD breaks the cedars; Yes, the LORD breaks in pieces the cedars of Lebanon. 6He makes Lebanon skip like a calf, And Sirion like a young wild ox. 7The voice of the LORD hews out flames of fire. 8The voice of the LORD shakes the wilderness; The LORD shakes the wilderness of Kadesh. 9The voice of the LORD makes the deer to calve And strips the forests bare; And in His temple everything says, “Glory!” 10The LORD sat as King at the flood; Yes, the LORD sits as King forever. 11The LORD will give strength to His people; The LORD will bless His people with peace.

******

This text instructs us to declare that Yahweh is majestic, powerful, and glorious. He is the awesome and powerful God. However, there is also before us the command to worship Yahweh in holy array. What does that mean? Is there some special clothing that is required for us to come into the presence of God? Yes, but probably not what you might think.

******

As with any time of worship, we must first reflect upon the glory of God. We must set our minds to dwell and consider His every infinite attribute. He is holy, righteous, just, love, mercy, grace, omnipotent, omniscient, omnipresent, immutable, and sovereign for all things at all times. There is no limit to who God is or what He can accomplish.

******

As we reflect upon the character of our boundless Father, we begin to examine ourselves. What we see is not pretty. We understand that God is conforming us into the image of His Son, but we recognize that we are hardly there yet. There is much about us that is not holy. We are not ready to enter into worship. We are not clean.

******

Like Isaiah, we can never come before a holy God and not recognize that we are unclean. Therefore, it is at this point that we again visit I John 1:9. We confess and God cleanses. We are never ready to truly worship until God washes away the filth of this world that has polluted our lives. Once, however, we are walking again in obedience and are our minds are totally fixed upon our righteous Father, we can fully and completely delight ourselves in His presence.

About The Place of Grace Ministries: In 1992, God interrupted the well-organized life of J. Ross Greer through a study called "Experiencing God". This encounter birthed a passionate vision for local churches that has become The Place of Grace Ministries. Through teaching, music, and writing, we call believers to return to the basic principles of God's Word and participate in the work of God.
