Chapters 6 through 8 of Judges tell of Gideon, the fifth Judge of Israel. Gideon was chosen by God to lead a small army to victory against the Midianites. Gideon became a hero of the people and ruled Israel as Judge for 40 years. However, this mighty hero had a less than valiant beginning.

After being oppressed by the Midianites for seven years, the people of Israel were defeated physically, emotionally, and spiritually. They felt abandoned by God and were completely without hope. In fact, when the Angel of God called, Gideon was threshing wheat in the bottom of a winepress so he would not be seen by the Midianites.

Judges 6:14-15
"The Lord turned to him and said, 'Go in the strength you have and save Israel out of Midian's hand. Am I not sending you?' 'But Lord,' Gideon asked, 'how can I save Israel? My clan is the weakest in Manasseh, and I am the least in my family."

Gideon was scared and saw himself as pretty worthless, but God saw the next deliverer of Israel. Gideon saw weakness, but God saw strength. Gideon saw his past failures and present fears, but God saw the future victories of a mighty warrior.

The scientific community tells us that birds see a different spectrum of light. A flower that looks dull and boring through our eyes can be alive with "colors" as viewed through the eyes of a bird. God also sees in a very unique "spectrum." Yesterday, today, and tomorrow are all history to God. He sees us not only as who we are, but also as who we will become.

Let's put aside the baggage of our past which clouds and distorts our view. Let's refuse to look through the filter of our present understanding and perceived limitations. God has called each of us into His Kingdom and given us an assignment which will be used to bring Him glory. He sees our full potential, so let's answer the call and move forward with confidence...let's trust His vision.
