There are times we feel pulled in so many directions. We run and run and run - only to find we're running in circles. God calls us to excellence. He wants us to be good workers, good students, and good family members. He also wants us to serve and encourage and minister - to strive for excellence so He will receive glory in all we do. However, through all this "striving," God wants us to remember what is truly important.
Martha had become irritated that her sister Mary was sitting at the feet of Jesus rather than helping her prepare the meal. In fact, she was so bothered that she approached Jesus and said: "Lord, don't You care that my sister has left me to do the work by myself? Tell her to help me!" (Luke 10:40). But Jesus very patiently replied:
Luke 10:41-42 "Martha, Martha, you are worried and upset about many things, but only one thing is needed. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her."
In our hurried life, this world continually tries to tell us what is important - what is necessary. It's not until we make the time to worship at the feet of Jesus that we hear: You have now "chosen what is better."
But worshiping at the feet of Jesus is a place we rarely go. We have so many competing inputs in our life that we often fail to give God even a moment of our thoughts. And when we do attempt a brief time of worship, our mind is so cluttered with "things" that we fail to truly approach and hear - fail to truly worship.
There are many things which can consume our thoughts and time, but God clearly calls us to a life focused on Him: "Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength." (Mark 12:30).
No matter what this or any other day may bring, we must live each and every moment in devotion to our Lord. We may need to adjust our priorities - we may need to reduce our competing inputs - but true worship at His feet is worth it ALL. Many things may seem important - but only one is needed!
