Jim Shoff Choose to Lead:
Lead Amidst Tragedy

As we all watched in terror the events that unfolded in New York, Washington and Pennsylvania, our minds were filled with thoughts, concerns and fears. In moments like these there needs to be no doubt in the clarity of our leaders to make wise decisions. As I watched and listened, the leadership shown by our president encouraged me.

When a country, a company, a family or an individual finds themselves thrown into a tragedy they must call upon all of their resources to endure. Our president showed his true leadership skills as he reacted and responded to the ever-changing events. What skills did he illustrate?

First he showed his wisdom when selecting cabinet and key leadership personnel to handle the key areas of his administration. These choices were often criticized and beleaguered throughout their confirmation process but to date have shown an unwavering ability to serve our country.

After making the decision to add these servants to his team President Bush then let them do their jobs. As I, like many, watched the countless hours of television coverage I heard over and over the second-guessing and maligning of the President and his actions from the newscasters commenting about the events as opposed to simply reporting the facts. Our president decided not to take over but to take charge. He worked with his key decision makers and let them make decisions under the careful supervision of President Bush and Vice-President Cheney.

Next the president exercised compassion. He took time to reassure the rescue and emergency personnel, the people of New York, the employees of the Pentagon, the families of the victims and the American people. He shared his grief, he promised his help and he committed to not let these acts go without unpunished.

Lastly and most importantly, our president showed and continues to show faith. Faith in a sovereign and loving God who hurts for the victims and their families, is angered by the actions of His creation, is faithful in his love and compassion. President Bush has called our country to pray for our country, to pray for him and to pray for those in need.

Now is the time for us to step up to our responsibility to lead amidst tragedy. Don't get caught in the second guessing game. Have faith in God and in our nation. Show compassion to those in need. Commit your mind and your heart in prayer for peace, hope and understanding among our nation.
