A.M.O.K. Running A.M.O.K.:
Using Drama to Help Your Church Think Outside "The Box"

by Dave Weiss (Dave's bio)

Send this page to a friend

Well, it's become a cliche- thinking outside the box. Too often though we do not really think outside the box, we simply repaint the box re-upholster the box or on occasion build a slightly larger box. The God we serve cannot be held in a box and his people should not be satisfied to live their whole Christian life by spending an hour a week in the box we call the church building. There is a lot to be done outside the box. The following is a skit that talks about going outside the box. Drama is one of the great ways of driving a point home. All you need are a few people and a big cardboard box.

The Box
by Dave Weiss

In this drama we will look at vision. We will look at how our thinking is limited by our surroundings and how as children of the ultimate Creator, we must push past our self imposed limits and seek the face, power and will of God.

In this drama we have five people all dressed in their Sunday best and carrying their Bibles.

Cast:
Fred
Samantha
Susan
Wilma
Barney (a child)

Props required:
a large three sided box (Large enough for all of them to fit in)
Five Bibles

(All characters enter one by one from stage left and enter the box through the opening in the back)

Fred: (enters whistling or humming Jesus Loves Me or another familiar hymn)

Samantha: (enters looking all around seeing the sights and enjoying the day, then walks in the box)

Fred: Well, Good morning Samantha what a beautiful day?

Samantha: Yes Fred, this is the day that the Lord has made..

Fred and Samantha: Let us rejoice and be glad in it.

Susan: (enters in a huff then walks into the box)

Fred: Good morning Susan, is everything all right.

Susan: (irritated) Don't get me started

Fred: Well, OK but...

Susan: I can't believe what they did!

Fred: Who...

Susan: the board, they're at it again.

Samantha: Susan your face is all red. Is everything all right?

Susan: I just can't believe it...

(Wilma and Barney enter, hand in hand. Wilma is in a hurry and Barney is lagging behind)

Wilma: Will you come on, we're going to be late.

Barney: Why?

Wilma: Because you couldn't find your shoes, now come on, we can't be late!

Barney: Why?

Wilma: Just come on! (they enter the box.)

Fred: Good morning Wilma, Good morning Barney

Wilma: Good Morning, Fred. What's wrong with Susan?

Susan: Wrong, I'll tell you what's wrong. It's the board. They're trying to make changes again.

Barney: Why?

Susan: I don't know but it's a problem, they're saying something about needing vision.

Wilma: Vision, why I can see just fine?

Fred: Not vision again, why do they keep bringing that up?

Samantha: I say we just leave things the way they are.

Barney: Why?

Samantha: Oh just because.

Susan: They talk about a growing community and reaching them and evangelism.

Barney: Why?

Susan: Why indeed, I mean have you seen those people?

Samantha: I'm really comfortable just the way things are, well not quite. Has anyone noticed it's getting crowded in here.

Susan: Well a little but I mean, community, community community. I have a sense of community right here.

Barney: Why?

Wilma: Barney, don't ask so many questions? Fred, you're stepping on my foot.

Fred: Oh I'm sorry, Yeah what's wrong with the status quo anyway?

Samantha: I don't know. If it was good enough for Paul and Silas, it's good enough for me. Your Bible is poking me.

Fred: Doesn't it say something in the Bible about keeping to yourself, be of the world and not in the world.

Wilma: Where does it say that?

Fred: Somewhere near the back, Book of Paul I think. Susan, dear, your elbow's in my back.

Susan: Oh sorry, We just need to keep going the way we're going and we'll be fine.

Barney: Why?

Wilma: I agree.

Barney: (louder) Why?

Samantha: Yeah me too. These four walls keep us safe.

Barney: (louder) Why?

Fred: I think so too, Ow my foot, would you please be careful.

Wilma: Sorry

Fred: Let's tell the board we want everything to stay just the way it is.

Barney: (yells) WHY?????

All five adults: (shouting) Because that's the way we've always done it.

(At these words the walls fall down and everyone stays crowded where the floor of the box was.)

Samantha: What do we do now?

Fred: I don't know, this has never happened before.

Susan: Let's pray that the walls would fly back into place.

Wilma: That would be a miracle.

Samantha: Does God still do miracles?

Fred: I don't know, I haven't seen one in a long time.

Susan: Do you remember Johnny?

Samantha: I sure do, He came in here stinking to high heaven.

Wilma: Yeah wandered right in off the street, of all the nerve.

Fred: Yeah and remember how when the pastor asked if anyone needed to know Jesus and he ran up the aisle all crying and making a scene. He stayed a while but then he left.

Wilma: They always do.

Susan: (realizing) Wilma, he became a missionary

Barney: Don't you get it, Jesus touched Johnny's life. And there's a whole lot of Johnny's out there.

Samantha: But Barney, your just a child you don't understand. If they're out there why don't they just come here and join us right here within these...four...walls.

Barney: Why don't you go to them? (Barney takes Wilma by the hand and exits a different way than the way they came)

Samantha: Of all the nerve.

Susan: He's right. What would happen if we could reach fifty people just like Johnny.

Fred: And what if all the other churches did too.

Susan: Maybe a vision is not such a bad idea.

Fred: I was feeling a little cooped up in there anyway, let's go.

Samantha: (disgusted) Well I'm going home!

Narrator: ...and a little child will lead them.
