Maximizing Motherhood
Be Good to Yourself

by Maureen Pearson (Maureen's bio)

My father-in-law encourages my husband to do things for personal joy once in a while. "Be good to yourself," he says.

Unfortunately for most women, we put others ahead of ourselves most of the time. Yes, I know that's what being a follower of Christ is about. The point is that to do our jobs we must take care of ourselves so that we can take care of others.

I recently heard a Christian speaker encourage women to do at least one thing a day for themselves to improve their spiritual and physical well being. It could be as simple as praying for good health, she said.

If we aren't doing well spiritually in our vertical relationship with God, then that will be reflected in our personal relationships on earth. Likewise, if we are stressed, rundown and feeling overwhelmed, we are not going to do our jobs as well as we would like.

When was the last time you worked on a hobby? You laugh? My husband encouraged me to "find" a hobby because he sensed I was concentrating my energy, time and talents on family, church and work. I chose scrapbooking. It doesn't receive a lot of my attention, but some evenings that hobby is what I need to escape from everything else.

If you can't decide on a hobby, why not take some time to window shop, browse the library or bookstore or just go to the card shop and read humorous cards?

A more Scriptural approach would be to spend time with God. Throughout the Gospels, we read about Jesus getting away and going to a solitary place to pray. Jesus even made time to do things with His closest friends.

Find time for yourself in a busy day. Make time for your family and close friends. You'll notice a difference in your outlook and perhaps people will notice a difference in you.

About Maureen Pearson: I am an at-home mother of two children and freelancer for The Tampa Tribune (daily newspaper). Prior to motherhood, I worked in "corporate America" as a mid-level manager for an international research and development organization. My communications background includes media relations, various business publications and broadcast news. While in my 20s, I made a profession of faith in Jesus Christ. My heart's desire is to show others the love of God available to us through His Son. My family and I are active members of Presbyterian Church in the Highlands, Lakeland, Florida. I've facilitated a number of small group studies for women focused on Bible study, prayer and learning God's will.
