He Will Sustain You

"Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light." Matthew 11: 28-30

"Cast thy burden upon the Lord, and he shall sustain thee: he shall never suffer the righteous to be moved." Psalms 55:22

Perhaps you are familiar with these passages of scripture about casting all our cares and worries upon the Lord, but what does it actually mean? How can it help us in those times when we seem so absorbed in our stress and weighed down with our burdens? How can we find this rest and refreshing peace for our souls in the midst of pure chaos in our lives?

One of the most wonderful things about being a Christian is knowing that we don't have to do it all by ourselves. Our wonderful, all-knowing God is right there along side us to strengthen and encourage us in our every day lives, but do we give Him the opportunity to help us in those high stress times? Do we look to Him first before trying to reason it out in our own understanding or "fix it" in our own strength? Where exactly does God fit into the whole picture?

Imagine for a moment how a babe craves to suckle and receive nourishing milk from the mother. Likewise, the Scriptures exhort us to do the same. "As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby: If so be ye have tasted that the Lord is gracious." 1 Peter 2:2-3. The milk will sustain the babe until the next feeding. When the hunger is the greatest, a babe will focus solely on the mother and receiving the milk for nourishment. It brings comfort, fulfillment and peace, which is usually followed by rest. God wants us to do the same thing with Him. He wants us come to Him, eagerly seeking the answers to our problems and stress. He wants us to give Him that place of priority in our lives, so that we can taste and see that His provision is sweet and satisfying, sustaining us through our every trial.

I challenge you to evaluate your time with God right now. Do you run to Him for sustenance when things begin to get heated, or do you try and work them out in your own strength and understanding? Do you search the Word daily for the answers to your problems, or do you look to the world to find fulfillment? Is your relationship with God a priority in your life? The answer to these questions is the key to unlocking the stress and chaos that plague your life. God wants to give you the strength, understanding, peace and rest to sustain you throughout all of life's trials and tribulations, but you must look to Him for the solution so that He can sustain you and uphold you in your time of need.
