Cultivating Appetites
by Kristenea M. LaVelle (Kristenea's bio) Send this page to a friend Psalm 34:8 Our appetites can have a positive or negative influence on us both physically and spiritually. For example, one can develop a thriving appetite for sweets and junk food but this does not profit the physical body. It may have a pleasant taste, but it does not offer the nutritional value that your body needs to thrive. We encounter the same thing spiritually. Developing a taste or appetite for the things of the world, like drinking, swearing or the love of money, etc. is detrimental to your spiritual growth and sustenance because the world is unable to give you the spiritual nutrition that you need to grow and mature as a Christian. Only God, by His glory revealed in creation and His Living Word, has the power to feed your spirit and soul with life. A refreshing abundance of life flows from God through His creation. Everywhere you look, nature is bustling with activity and vibrant color. This is the life-giving power of God revealed in our every day existence. This is how close God is to each of us every moment of the day. To delight oneself in God's magnificent creation brings life and sustenance to the spirit, for the peace and joy of God flow from the things of God. Beloved, have you come to embrace the things of God and develop a taste for His mighty creation? Does the revelation of God leave a sweet savor in your spirit that produces an insatiable appetite for His Living Word? Has your appetite for God grown, or is it stunted by the appetites of the world? I encourage you, in the love of Christ, to evaluate the tastes and appetites in your own life to determine the source of your consumption. Are your appetites producing the fruit of righteousness or is it causing your fruit to wither and die? Bon Apetite!
