Kristenea LaVelle Sowing Seed

"…The kingdom of God is like a man who scatters seed upon the ground, then continues sleeping and rising night and day while the seed sprouts and grows and increases, he knows not how." Mark 4:26-27 (Amplified)

Birdsong ushers in a new day, and budding trees announce that spring is upon us once again. Already, rainbows of colorful flowers decorate yards and window boxes as the first blooms welcome the springtime sun. Bright dandelions sprinkle the yard with dots of sunshine as we rush headlong into summer. Trees and plants of all varieties are awakening after a long winter's rest, and the time for planting and yard work is now upon us.

Ah…planting and yard work. Preparations for gardens and the thought of fresh veggies fill the thoughts. I am reminded of the sowing of seed, and the impact it has on the environment around us. In a physical sense, it can greatly enhance our yards with beauty and our tables with the freshest of foods. But what does this mean in a spiritual sense? What exactly is our part in the planting of seed for the kingdom of God? Here is a simple example to illustrate our position in sowing the seed of God into the lives of others.

In order to get a jump-start on the season we started planting a little early. That means we started seedlings in the house, so that they would be ready to plant in the ground when the weather and soil permitted it. Our family went to the store and purchased the seed and planter box, but we did not plant them right away. Day after day, the children grew more and more excited to plant the seeds. As their expectation grew, so did their persistence, and it paid off. They were overflowing with anticipation and simple joy, and the time had come to plant. With willingness and determination, tiny, inexperienced fingers poked delicate seeds into the soil. Sure enough, just a few days later, their eagerness was rewarded with tiny green sprouts.

My children, though not skilled gardeners, were able to plant seed and watch it spring to growth. Their inexperience at gardening did not inhibit the seed from growing. The seed only needed to be planted to grow, because the quality is in the seed, not the sower. This is a very important concept for us as Christians to understand and put to work in our own lives. We must realize that the Word of God (seed) is very high quality and is perfectly designed to do exactly what God wants it to do. We need only to plant it. There is no prerequisite involved. The newest, most inexperienced Christian can be just as effective as the older, more mature Christian. The sowing of the seed simply rests upon our willingness to be used of God to reach others with the gospel message. God takes care of the rest.

I challenge you to become a "sower of the seed" and begin actively spreading the gospel message. Even passing out a simple tract is sufficient for God to reach a lost, hurting soul. Take a step of faith and allow God to use you to reach the lost. You will be blessed!

"For as the rain cometh down, and the snow from heaven, and returneth not thither, but watereth the earth, and maketh it bring forth and bud, that it may give seed to the sower, and bread to the eater: so shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it." Isaiah 55:10-11
