Kristenea LaVelle The Shape of Unity

Two are better than one; for they have a good return for their labour. For if they fall, the one will lift up his fellow…Again, if two lie together then they have heat: but how can one be warm alone? And if one prevail against him, two shall withstand him; and a threefold cord is not quickly broken."
Ecclesiastes 4:9-12

Often times it has been said that the picture of a good marriage is one with God at the pinnacle of the relationship. Nothing suits this statement better than the familiar proverb…"a threefold cord is not quickly broken." However, it is clear that this wisdom applies to all relationships that are centered around God, and of course, it is of great importance when considering our Christian brothers and sisters.

We know from scripture that when two or more are gathered, God is present. How often do we need to reach out to a close friend for support and prayer for the trials that life brings? How often do we join together in prayer for a common cause? This uniting of friends and bretheren in prayer creates a clear picture of a spiritual triangle with the base resting upon the earth and the point reaching into the heavens, to the very throne of God.

Scripture reveals to us that God is a God of relationships. In fact, the Ten Commandments are all designed to help preserve the relationships around us, man to man and man to God. With that in mind, lets look at the two greatest commands in which the entire law of God is summarized.

"Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind." (the point of the triangle) Matthew 22:37

"Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself" (the base of the triangle) Matthew 22:39

The triangle is a simple, yet incredibly strong structure. Now think of how many "triangle" relationships you have in your life. It is easy to see that God has given us such a treasure in each other…one Christian brother to another. It is imperative to recognize this simple truth and allow it to enrich our lives day by day. As we come together in unity lifting our burdens to the Lord on one another's behalf, then the hand of God moves to accomplish His will in our lives. This is why we must love, serve and always prefer our brother above ourselves. It preserves the "triangle" relationships we have and serves to strengthen the body of believers as a whole. When this simple truth begins to impact our lives, then God will be able to move in power through His people and there will be unity among ALL of God's children.

"Think on this doctrine…that reasoning beings were created for one another's sake." Marcus Aurelius

"What do we live for if not to make the world less difficult for each other?"
George Eliot

"A faithful friend is a strong defense and he that hath found such a one hath found a treasure." An old proverb.
