The Day Dusty Died
by Lynn Wallace (Lynn's bio)

Yesterday, Freddie's dog, Dusty ducked under the fence. He ran out into the street. Freddie heard a loud screech and tears ran down his face. Dusty died.

"I can't live without Dusty," Freddie said to his Mom. She put her arms around him and hugged him. She cried, too.

His little sister, Babs, cried and cried. "I want Dusty, I want Dusty," she said. Even Dad took out his big hankerchief and wiped tears away from his eyes.

Dad built a little box just the right size for Dusty. He grabbed a shovel. Mom carried Dusty in an old green towel. The family paraded quietly to the back yard. Dad dug a hole. He put Dusty and the towel in the box. They buried him. Babs placed dandelions on top the grave. They sang, "Jesus Loves Me." The family whispered, "Jesus loves Dusty, too.

"Jennifer, the girl next door, watched them bury Dusty. "Mom said that my cat went to Heaven," she said. "Dusty went to Heaven with the angels."

"No, he didn't," Freddie yelled. "Dusty's in the ground."

He looked up at his Dad. "Dusty's in the ground, isn't he," Freddie said. Dad scratched his head. "Maybe he went to Heaven. Horses will be in Heaven. But maybe he'll stay in the ground. The Bible doesn't really say, and I don't know. I do know Jesus loves Dusty."

Freddie twisted up his face. "How do you know horses will be in Heaven? Dad."

"Because it says so in the Bible. I'll show you tonight after supper."

"Mr. Evans, can I come over?" Jennifer said.

Dad smiled. "Yes, if your Mom and Dad say it's okay."

That evening Dad opened his Bible to Revelation 19:11, 14. He read, "And I saw heaven opened, and behold a white horse; and he that sat upon him was called Faithful and True...And the armies which were in heaven followed him upon white horses." Then he smiled as he said, "All who belong to Jesus will ride upon white horses."

Jennifer frowned, "I like horses, Mr. Evans, but who is Jesus?"

"He came to take away our sins--our wrongdoing. Jennifer, He died for our sins and then He came alive again. Do you want to belong to Jesus?"

Jennifer nodded her head. Dad prayed with her. She had a big smile. "Now I'll see Jesus and Dusty. I'll ride a white horse, too."
