I stared mindlessly at the blank screen for a long time waiting for inspiration for this morning's Gleanings From The Word. My mind remained as blank as the screen. I got up did a few things, then sat down hoping for more success the second time around. I chewed on the words "second time around" for a while and realized that they represented a powerful Biblical concept.
When we're born, we're born into sin. Our destiny is hell and the journey one of hopelessness and despair. Somewhere along the line we hear about Jesus and we are given the opportunity to be born again.
After the second birth, we have hope.
David said about him: " `I saw the Lord always before me. Because he is at my right hand, I will not be shaken. Therefore my heart is glad and my tongue rejoices; my body also will live in hope, because you will not abandon me to the grave, nor will you let your Holy One see decay. Acts 2:25-27 NIV
We have forgiveness.
If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness 1 John 1:9 NIV
We have heaven as a destination.
In reply Jesus declared, "I tell you the truth, no one can see the kingdom of God unless he is born again. " John 3:3 NIV
Holy Spirit moves in.
Guard the good deposit that was entrusted to you--guard it with the help of the Holy Spirit who lives in us. 2 Timothy 1:14 NIV
We can have peace.
And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:7 NIV
We can have joy in the midst of suffering.
Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, and into an inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade--kept in heaven for you, who through faith are shielded by God's power until the coming of the salvation that is ready to be revealed in the last time. In this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while you may have had to suffer grief in all kinds of trials. These have come so that your faith--of greater worth than gold, which perishes even though refined by fire--may be proved genuine and may result in praise, glory and honor when Jesus Christ is revealed. Though you have not seen him, you love him; and even though you do not see him now, you believe in him and are filled with an inexpressible and glorious joy, for you are receiving the goal of your faith, the salvation of your souls. 1 Peter 1:3-9 NIV
That's just a taste of the things that are ours the second time around. There are also some huge theological implications about Christ and His second time around, but I'm out of room so they have to wait until another day.
