I sat and watched the rain roll off the roof. The storm was finishing and the sun shone brightly behind it. As each stream of rain dripped off the roof, the sun behind it was reflected in it. It seemed I was looking through streams of liquid light, liquid sunshine.
I had heard all the standard jokes about rain being liquid sunshine but I had never seen real liquid sunshine before. It was truly unlike anything else I had ever seen.
I sat in awe. Is that even really a valid word anymore? We've used awe and awesome so much it doesn't seem to have much weight anymore.
As I wrote the last line, I went to dictionary.com and looked up the word awe. One of the definitions says in part A mixed emotion of reverence, respect, dread, and wonder inspired by authority, genius, great beauty, sublimity, or might.
That was how I felt, a mix of reverence and wonder inspired by great beauty.
As I watched the liquid light, all I could think about was the wonder of God and envisioned the light that must be reflected off Him. Considering the brilliance of the raindrops and the sun behind them and comparing them to the light of God I realized that it is no wonder that none can look on His face and live. Our minds and souls simply couldn't comprehend the beauty, majesty and awe we would feel.
The true light is both here and coming still. We get a taste of it now, but in time we will see Him revealed in all his glory.
Yet I am writing you a new command; its truth is seen in him and you, because the darkness is passing and the true light is already shining. 1 John 2:8 NIV
Whatever light, beauty, wisdom, truth, love and forgiveness and more we have seen, is no more than little raindrops rolling off the roof. When He is revealed to us in His fullness, awe just won't cut it as a word. All the words ever written won't be enough to express our wonder, joy and thanksgiving.
If you're in a dark place, know the light is here and coming in power. If you're standing in the light, be prepared to be overwhelmed by more.
Until next time, be ready for the real coming of the Light, the One who makes it all pale to insignificance in comparison.
Be blessed.
Hallelu Yah
