Getting Involved

2 Timothy 1:6a
"For this reason I remind you to fan into flame the gift of God,…"

It was the same thing every year for Justin. The track coach hounded him to join the team. It was bad enough that his mother got on his case about "getting involved". What was so special about "getting involved" that all the adults in his life made it a career to see him do it?

Okay, so maybe he was a natural runner and the track team made sense but maybe he would rather just stay at home in front of the computer. Being part of the team meant a lot of time, a lot of energy and even hanging around with some kids he did not even like. Schoolwork was also a whole lot easier to manage without "getting involved". Not to mention that this was the only time in his life when he could spend afternoons relaxing, smelling the roses, whatever. Low stress is good, right?

Justin made up his mind, track team was out for another year.

He had the choice. He did not have to participate. He did not have to give up his time or his comfort even if he was destined to be the best. Was there any reason for him to choose otherwise?

Jesus also did not have to give up his time or his comfort. Why leave a perfectly good home where He was loved, worshiped, and adored? Why go from royalty to poverty? Why let His enemies physically, emotionally and spiritually attack Him? Why did Jesus choose otherwise?

If Justin valued his ability, if he realized his gift would add not only to his life but also to others, maybe then he would be willing to give more of himself. At the end of the day he could say, "I improved my run time two tenths of a second." At the end of the race he could say "I helped my team place in the county trials." At the end of the season he could say "I helped a freshman stick with it and I'm in great shape, ready for the swim team." Those are reasons to go for it.

Jesus had a reason too. His was love. He loved you enough to endure the trial that His earthly life would bring. And not just that but He accepted the suffering of the cross. His blood was His gift. He gave His life, shared His gift and provided you salvation.

Did God give you a gift, an ability that you are not using? Are you shelving that special way with older people, that beautiful voice, that great poetry, or your strength in the face of danger? Have you thought nothing of your quick mind, your long patience, or your ability to make people smile? Whatever gifts you have get out there and do what you can with them. Some things are worth the trouble.
