the kirk bovill project

The Kirk Bovill Project CD "Love So Real" sat unreviewed for a while. Kirk even e-mailed me a few times asking me if I listened to it. Now, I know why he was so eager for me to hear it. The arrangements and production on this CD are top-notch. Kirk wrote all the songs except for "There is Joy" which he co-wrote with producer Randy Emata.

It's hard for me to categorize the CD. It's a great mix of pop, rock, jazz, funk and R&B.

Kirk and his wife Joannie (who sings lead on "There is Joy") are based in San Jose, California. My only major criticism of this CD is I would have liked more than one song with lead vocals by Joannie. While you read the rest of the review, I'm going to listen to her song again.

Worship You- This is a great upbeat song to begin the CD. I love the horn arrangements by Norbert Stachel.

Find Him Within- A beautiful track with a wonderful jazzy mood. Rock Hendricks' saxophone adds a great touch to this song. "Seek out His face / And you will find Him within."

Kickin Devil Butt- This is a fun song with a great beat. If this doesn't get you toe tappin', I don't know what will. One of my favorites.

Standin' On The Edge- Our friends often won't listen to us unless we've gone through the same trials they have. That's what this song deals with. This is one of the few songs on the CD that I had to listen to twice to get a good feel for it. The lyrics are what grabbed me here with lines like "The devil's got you thinkin' / You can do it all on your own." Most people can relate to that and call the lyric their own.

He Calls Me Friend- I really love this song. Great guitar riffs, excellent horn arrangements and an extremely catchy chorus.

Love So Real- The title song starts off as a beautiful ballad with acoustic guitar and sax. In the chorus, the sax comes on stronger with keyboards, drums and bass adding to the gorgeous mix. A definitely more upbeat song in the chorus. This is a great love song.

There Is Joy- Kirk turns over the vocals to his wife Joannie on this track. Joannie does a lot of the background vocals on this CD and I'm glad she came up front for this one. She has a great voice. This song was co-written with producer Randy Emata.

Thank You- Probably my least favorite on the CD. I guess I would have liked to see more variety on this track, perhaps a guitar solo to break it up.

Open Your Heart- This is a beautiful song. Very soothing piece accented by some great saxophone. Turn the lights down low and relax during this track.

Walk the Talk- The CD picks up pace with this number. Have I said before how much I like the horn arrangements on this CD? Tom Landry adds some great electric guitar work here.

The CD ends with a short reprise of "There Is Joy".

Overall, an excellent CD. Major labels need to give The Kirk Bovill Project a listen.
