kaly http://www.solidwalnut.com/kaly.html (Also check out Kaly's mp3 page at mp3.com) "Tonight" is Kaly's debut CD. Kaly is a mother of three children. She lives in the Tacoma, Washington area and teaches voice and piano. After hearing this CD, I know her students are in good hands. This woman's voice is incredible. An indie that could outsing many major label artists. The CD has a total of fifteen songs including a mix of gorgeous ballads, upbeat pop tunes and covers of popular Contemporary Christian songs. On four of the songs Kaly is backed by a full band consisting of Steve Cass on acoustic and electric guitars (he also does background vocals), Kerry Jackson on bass, and Dan Tomlinson on drums and percussion. One interesting sidenote is that Dan is Lyle Lovett's touring drummer. On other songs Kaly is backed by herself on keyboards and piano or by Steve on guitar. On a couple songs, she uses backing tracks. I Fly to the Fountain- This has to be one of my favorites on this CD. The song starts off with a beautiful acoustic guitar prelude by Steve Cass. Steve needs to be heard by many more people. He's that good. Later in the song, Steve also shows off his skills on the electric guitar with an excellent, but all too brief, solo. Kaly's vocals build in intensity throughout this song. She really shows some power near the end. Of course, Dan Tomlinson's drumming adds incredibly to that power. Let Your Love Flow Through Me- If a song is judged by how catchy the chorus is, then this is a great song. After the first listen, you'll find yourself singing this a lot. We really do need to let God's love flow through us. Tonight- This is a hauntingly beautiful love song to God. All we have here is Kaly's voice and Steve's guitar, but truly that's all we need. I've heard Steve do this song by himself and I thought, "I love the guitar but the song needs an awesome vocalist to really make it stand out." Well, it appears he found that voice in Kaly. This is an intensely worshipful song. Better Angels of Our Nature- On this song, Kaly adds her keyboard talent to her vocals. Penned by Wayne Kirkpatrick, this was originally sung by Susan Ashton on her "Angels of Mercy" album. One drawback in singing cover songs is that you'll be compared to the original artist. In this case though, I like Kaly's version better. Ashton's version had more professional production, but Kaly's voice wins out here. The Power- This tune has a much different feel than many of the other songs. Part of the reason is that Kaly used a backing track instead of studio musicians. I admit that I didn't like this the first few times I heard it, but it's really been growing on me. Amy Grant originally did this number on her "House of Love" album, so I'm sure Amy fans will want to give it a listen. My Life is in Your Hands- What a beautiful song. Kaly has been compared to Kathy Troccoli and what better way to show it than singing this wonderful Troccoli tune. I teared up the first time I heard Kaly's version of this song. I wish we truly realized our life is in God's hands. One of my favorites on this CD. Give Praise- One of the shortest songs on the disc and I wish it was longer. Kaly's beautiful voice is again complemented by Steve's beautiful guitar. Steve did this song himself on his first CD and I have to say I like both versions equally well. Listen to this one and you'll want to praise God too. Almighty- I'm not sure if the prophet Amos imagined his words would be turned into song, but I'm sure he'd like this tune. We have Kaly's vocals and Steve's guitar again. I'm finding it hard to describe how well these two fit together musically. Every time I try, I start falling into cliches. You'll just have to give a listen to see what I mean. Breath of Heaven- This is probably one of my least favorite songs on the CD. Kaly's vocals are great as usual, but this song doesn't seem to have the power of other Kaly songs. This is another Amy Grant song, off her "Home for Christmas" album. Go Light Your World- This popular Kathy Troccoli song was penned by Chris Rice. I'm beginning to see why Kaly is compared to Troccoli. Their voices are very similar. You wouldn't mistake one for the other, but the likeness is definitely there. A great song with an important message. Be Thou My Vision- I've always loved this hymn based on an ancient Irish prayer. Kaly does a wonderful rendition of it. I could listen to this song quite a few times without getting tired of it. My only complaint is that Kaly didn't sing more of the verses. Holy Tears of Joy- This is an incredibly beautiful song. I was worshiping God all through this one. One of my favorite lines is "My hands are lifted high to Thee shaking prayerfully." What an awesome way to describe worship of God. Kaly will have you praising God right along with her on this track. The High Road- Kaly picks up the pace with this song about taking the high road of following God instead of the low road of following our flesh. In places, the lyrics come a little too quickly to catch the meaning. The music is really catchy though. I love Steve's guitar work and Dan Tomlinson's percussion adds some great flavor. Everywhere- Another catchy, fun tune. I love Kaly's ballads, but I have a feeling she really has a blast singing these upbeat songs. Not one of Kaly's best upbeat songs, but I do like it. The lyrics are based on Psalm 139. Angel- This last track is from Sarah McLachlan's 1997 album "Surfacing". It's probably my least favorite song on the CD. Kaly's voice is still great though and shows some real passion on this track. I look forward to hearing more from Kaly. - Jason Mitchener |
