america gomorrah http://www.americagomorrah.com (Also check out my interview with America Gomorrah on GetChristianMusic.com) America Gomorrah got its name from a line in the song "Beautiful America" by ska band Five Iron Frenzy. This indie band from Colorado is hardly ska though. Their debut album "Exchanging Truth For A Lie" is solidly in the rock genre. Gene Crout, lead vocals and guitar, did almost all the songwriting on this hour-length disc. Bob Waldman plays some excellent bass while Carl Busser keeps the beat on drums. The first cut "Truth For A Lie" lets you know that you're in for quite a ride. This progressive rocker has awesome lyrics that give the stark realization that we often "manufacture our perception of Truth." "Seven Trumpets" is an instrumental progressive rock song with seven sections, each representing the seven trumpets in Revelation. Gene Crout's background in music composition really shows through in this song. "More Than A Carpenter" is a straight ahead rocker that shows us that Jesus is more than people realize. Who would've thought that a title of a Josh McDowell book would sound like this? The fourth cut "Yamiso" is pronounced "why am I so?" The song is a soulful lament with some crunchy electric guitar. I wish Gene's vocals were more up front on this one because the words to this song are excellent... "why am I so weak, when I want to be strong?" "Good and Faithful Servant" is a power rock ballad that is reminiscent of some rock ballads from the eighties. Some excellent electric guitar here. This is one of my favorites, although it's not typical America Gomorrah. The lyrics remind us that nothing can truly satisfy except God's love for us. Cut number six "Revelation 101" starts out with a phone ringing and then a recorded voice saying, "At the tone, please record your message.." The song is the message left on the answering machine. The band has an awesome miniature jam session halfway through the song. "Better Man" is lyrically one of my favorite songs on the CD. In my ears, the music doesn't stand out from the rest of the songs though. The prelude to "This Present Plague" is totally cool. It then leads into Bob Waldman's awesome opening bass riff. This instrumental is more solidly progressive rock than other cuts on the CD. If you think you've been cheated because there's only nine cuts on this CD, think again! The last cut "Through a Glass Darkly" is over twelve minutes long. Gene has some of his best vocals on this one. It's also a great closer for the CD with the ending line, "Love is the Answer." America Gomorrah's debut CD is truly a welcome answer to some of the "wanna-be" music found on Christian radio. - Jason Mitchener |
