Homeschooling in the Fast Lane:The Check is in the Mail: Goal Setting for Children by Marilynn Griffith (Marilynn's bio) Send this page to a friend Each January, millions of adults scramble to purchase diet dinners and plastic organizers to implement their New Year's resolutions. As the laws are made and broken, children watch and wonder wishing they'd been given some input into the crazy scheme. At least then it might have been accomplished. As my daughter says, "Grown-ups have a short memory". It's true. Involving children in your goal-setting is a learning experience for them and provides accountability for the adults in their lives. In an effort to reach new goals, our youth group hosted a "Letter from Last Year" campaign. We plan to continue it as a family, but it could be used for any group. Here's how it works: 1.Record three goals for the coming year. Have each person address an envelope to themselves and seal it. If these are family goals, make one list together with kid input. 2. Appoint a group mailman to collect the letters and mail them at the end of the year. (Do mail them. Don't just hand them back.) 3. Meet the following January and reward those with the most "checks" on their lists. My husband is going to write a check for the children's saving accounts. 4. At the same meeting, do it all again! Be forewarned, the kids usually do better than the adults!
