Homeschooling in the Fast Lane:Clover Power: Enriching Your Homeschool through 4H by Marilynn Griffith (Marilynn's bio) Send this page to a friend People are constantly asking me for recommendations of extracurricular activities to add to their homeschool. Almost always, my first answer is, "4H". If you're thinking of dairy cows and goat competitions from when you were a kid, think again! Those things are still a part of the program but new components like babysitting classes, fashion shows, and leadership seminars are on the program now. Not to mention the free training in gardening and science. Where we live, 4H members are eligible for special categories in the county fair. One homeschool mom I know has her children earn their Christmas money by submitting their artwork and projects and winning cash prizes. HOW DO I SIGN UP? Look in the phone book for your county extension office. About this time each year, they send out cards to filled out and returned. You can join an existing group or be an at-large member and pick up materials as you need them. After you're signed up, you should receive a newsletter periodically detailing the upcoming events. HOW CAN I USE THIS FOR SCHOOL? For several years, I watched another family we're friends with participate in 4H contests and use the materials for their science. This year we decided to join in and we're training for the Horticulture contest at the county fair. We're going to make scrapbook pages of the plants we learn and submit them in the fair also in the art category. Other moms I know have garden clubs with their children, participate in the annual speech contest, or complete project books that coordinate with the subjects they're learning. The possibilities are endless. The great thing is, anyone who completes a project book or activity receives a pin at a year-end ceremony. The kids love it and it adds a nice touch to any portfolio. I hope some of you will try 4H or continue to participate in it this year. http://www.4h-usa.org/ National 4H Headquarters http://www.fourhcouncil.edu/ National 4H Council http://www.4-h.org/ The 4H Web
