You hear the scream. You examine your child. A very banged up knee. Solution: R.I.C.E. it! Let me explain. R.I.C.E. stands for Rest, Ice, Compression, and Elevation.

Rest. Rest or reduce activity for an injured joint or muscle by temporarily re-directing a child to less vigorous activities.

Ice. Apply ice up to fifteen minutes for reducing pain and swelling. Keep an ice pack ready in your freezer or use crushed ice when available. A small bag of crushed ice molds to an arm or leg with greater ease.

Compression. Use an ace wrap for compression only if you know how to apply it properly. An ace wrap stabilizes a joint and decreases swelling.

Elevation. Finally, slightly elevate the arm or leg but not above the level of the heart. Elevation reduces swelling.

The next time someone has an injury at home--and you know there will be a next time--consider rice. I mean, R.I.C.E.!

Follow-Through:
Do you know what to do in an emergency or how to handle simple injuries? Consider calling your local Red Cross to sign up for a first aid course. You'll be glad you did!

Keep a checklist handy of simple first aid procedures and phone numbers.

For Your Soul Consideration:
Be encouraged-- Jesus Christ understands exactly how to take care of bruises and injuries that occur in our lives.

"A bruised reed He will not break, and a dimly burning wick He will not extinguish..." (Isaiah 42:3 NAS)
