Face to Face: God Is Sovereign by J. Ross Greer of The Place of Grace Ministries (about the ministry) [Note: If you'd like to read more from J. Ross Greer, be sure to subscribe to his daily e-mail list A Word For The Church.] How can we come to know God in a more intimate way? In the Old Testament, God revealed Himself through His names. As God first greets us, He introduces Himself as Elohim. In the original, the name Elohim speaks of God's power, might, and sovereignty. At times, you may feel that life is moving too quickly, and that circumstances are out of your control. Viewing the events in New York City and Washington may have left you feeling helpless. To Whom can you run? Psalm 91:2 says, "I will say to the Lord, 'My refuge and my fortress, My God (Elohim) in whom I trust!'". Regardless of our circumstances, our Almighty God is still on the throne and remains in complete control of the universe. NO event occurs without the permission and outside the purposes of Elohim. We may have confidence in God's ability to create and control the universe, but often we question His purpose in creating us as He did. As we read on in Genesis 1, we must note in verse 26 that we were created in the image of God. And though the creation was marred by sin in Chapter 3, David could still give praise in Psalm 139:14 - "I will give thanks to Thee, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made". God made no mistake in your creation, and He will continue His work in you until you are just like His Son (see Philippians 1:6). So, how can we practically apply this truth? How does it affect my life that God is omnipotent and sovereign? Psalm 20:7 states, "Some boast in chariots and some in horses, But we will boast in the name of the LORD, our God." Also note Jeremiah 32:27, 7"Behold, I am the LORD, the God of all flesh; is anything too difficult for Me?" The applied truth is this: we do not have to be in control, when we have a relationship with the God who is. We must learn to trust Him with every area of our lives. He has yet to make a mistake. Can we say that? He has yet to fail. Is that our track record? He knows that we cannot handle life, but He will not force us to yield ourselves to His control. If we desire to have a more intimate walk with the Father, we must trust Him implicitly.
