Face to Face:Listen by J. Ross Greer of The Place of Grace Ministries (about the ministry) [Note: If you'd like to read more from J. Ross Greer, be sure to subscribe to his daily e-mail list A Word For The Church.] 13:4You shall follow the LORD your God and fear Him; and you shall keep His commandments, listen to His voice, serve Him, and cling to Him. 26:17You have today declared the LORD to be your God, and that you would walk in His ways and keep His statutes, His commandments and His ordinances, and listen to His voice. 18The LORD has today declared you to be His people, a treasured possession, as He promised you, and that you should keep all His commandments; 10:27My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me; 28and I give eternal life to them, and they will never perish; and no one will snatch them out of My hand. How well do we recognize the voice of our Father? Why do we have difficulty in keeping His commandments and following Him? There is the conflict with the world. Our flesh is so accustomed to following after the desires of the world. We hear familiar voices calling us back to our former life. We must resist the pull of the world. We are to stand against the ways of death. We also face a conflict with ourselves. We think we know what is best. We confuse God's will with our own. In addition, we decide what we think is right decision, and then ask God to bless our choice. Jesus said, ""Truly, truly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of Himself, unless it is something He sees the Father doing; for whatever the Father does, these things the Son also does in like manner" (John 5:19). In John 8:28 Jesus also states, "I do nothing on My own initiative, but I speak these things as the Father taught Me." We must stop charting our own course and receive our direction from the Father, as Jesus did. Are we listening? We may hear or recognize the voice of our Master, but are we giving heed to what He is saying? Are we responding in obedience to His commands? Are we following His lead? An obedient response is at the heart of the issue of listening. If we long to know intimacy with the Father, we must develop a listening ear that is tuned only to His voice.
