Face to Face:Example by J. Ross Greer of The Place of Grace Ministries (about the ministry) [Note: If you'd like to read more from J. Ross Greer, be sure to subscribe to his daily e-mail list A Word For The Church.] 17:3The LORD was with Jehoshaphat because he followed the example of his father David's earlier days and did not seek the Baals, 4but sought the God of his father, followed His commandments, and did not act as Israel did. Do you have a mentor? In pursuing a relationship with the Father, we need examples to follow. Fortunately, the Scripture is full of them. Note our primary text. Jehoshaphat followed David's example. David was a man after God's own heart, we are told. Jehoshaphat learned from David to seek God and obey His commandments. We would do well if that was the central motivation of our lives. Several passages in Exodus caught my attention. The phrase that kept appearing is "they did just as the LORD commanded". What an example that is for us! Nothing complicated - just pure, unquestioned obedience. "Brethren, join in following my example, and observe those who walk according to the pattern you have in us" (Philippians 3:17). We would do well to study the life of Paul, and imitate his life. Of course, Jesus is our ultimate mentor and example. Note 1 Peter 2:21 - "For you have been called for this purpose, since Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example for you to follow in His steps". We are to conduct ourselves according to the pattern that Christ left for us. We also are to be examples for others. "Let no one look down on your youthfulness, but rather in speech, conduct, love, faith and purity, show yourself an example of those who believe" (1 Timothy 4:12). Mentoring is never a one-sided deal. We each should have a Paul (mentor) and Timothy (follower) in our lives.
