T. Suzanne Eller Diggin' Deep:
Creaky Windows

When I first married my husband I faced fear like no other. I lived in a new place. I was a city girl that now lived in the country. Every sound and smell was unfamiliar. Sometimes at night, I was gripped by fear to the point of not being able to move or even breathe. It was crazy, but I didn't know how to make it go away.

One night I prayed and asked God to help me overcome this stupid fear. God told me that I should recognize my fear for what it was. So I lay in bed and I listened, really listened, and when fear started to come, I closed my mind and eyes until the source was identified. The first sound was a creaky window. Hmm. Nothing too scary there. Then another sound. Hmm. A rustling of country critters under the house. Nothing to frightening there. Before long, I realized that the source of my fears were nothing huge, nothing that I had imagined.

Sometimes we have to determine whether the fears we face are a creaky window or a real source of worry.

One teen wrote me and said she feared that she would not make it in the rapture. She loved God. Sometimes she made mistakes, but her heartbeat was to serve God and she learned from her mistakes. I reminded her that when she accepted Christ as her Savior, that there was a covenant agreement between her and God, that God would help her grow in her faith. He wouldn't abandon her when she made a mistake. That fear was a creaky window.

Another question was about the uncertainty in America. Should we live in fear due to terrorism? That's a real fear, isn't it? Americans have been immune to hardships for many years. We are just now waking up to the fact that people across the world face turmoil every day. What happens if more tragic events happen in America? God will be with us. Christianity doesn't mean the absence of conflict, but rather the presence of God in the midst of conflict. Though it's not a creaky window kind of fear, it doesn't change the fact of who God is.

I don't know what spiritual battle you are going through right now, but I do know this: God can be HUGE in our lives when allow him to help us combat fear—whether a creaky window kind of fear or real circumstances that take our breath away.

Have not I commanded you? Be strong, vigorous, and very courageous. Be not afraid, neither be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go. Joshua 1:9 (Amplified Bible)
