T. Suzanne Eller Dear Suzie?

Dear Suzie:

Every time I tell the truth, I get in trouble. I know that God wants me to be honest, but my parents go way over the top when I let them know I’ve messed up. It’s easier to say nothing, but then I feel like I’m letting God down. What should I do? Meagan, Age 14

Dear Meagan,

I’m sorry that your parents react the way that they do, but I’m proud of you for doing the right thing. It’s so easy to lie. In fact, people can become so smooth with it that soon they’re not sure what the truth is all about. Becoming a person of integrity is not an overnight process, but it’s a worthwhile goal. It allows those around you to know that they can trust your word. It pleases God. It keeps you honest. Every night when you go to bed, you can rest knowing that you are living a life that is real.

Ask your parents if you can talk to them (when things are not hot). Tell them that you are striving to be honest. Ask them to help you. Promise them that when you do slip up, you will make it right with them. Ask them to pray with you and to help you grow spiritually in this area. Work together with your mom and dad to come up with a set of consequences that will help you learn from your mistakes, but not knock you down emotionally.

I’m so proud of you for wanting to be a person of integrity. I believe in you, sis!
