T. Suzanne Eller Dear Suzie?

Dear Suzie:

I'm bored with church (not God), but that makes sense since I've been raised in church my whole life. I've heard it all, seen it all, done it all. What's next? A.D.

Dear A:

Picture this: You are in a class. You've been there for 16 years, sitting under the finest teaching available. You never leave your seat, never touch a computer, because you've seen and heard it all. Your head is crammed with knowledge. You have come to hate computers because the sound of the teacher's voice just washes over you by now.

How boring would that be? What are you missing by not surfing the 'net or creating a masterpiece in the latest desktop publishing program or listening to the latest tunes?

You probably got bored a long time ago. There comes a time in every person's life when they've got to take what they've learned and go to the next level. Rather than “taking it in”, it's time to give it out. I tell my discipleship class that they can be obese Christians, stuffing themselves continually with knowledge and spiritual highs like church is some kind of all you can eat buffet, or they can be lean, mean fighting machines for God, taking what they have been given and using it to minister to others. You don't have to wait to be an adult to be used in ministry. In fact, God gifted you from the very beginning and you have purpose written all over your life.

Ask your youth pastor where he can plug you into ministry. Ask God to open your eyes to ministry opportunities. Some ideas are altar worker, worship band, drama, greeter, prayer ministry, helping younger teens in discipleship, leading a bible study, video bits, computer work like websites, writing, email ministry, fundraisers for missions, adopt a block, street ministry, food pantry, phone follow up team, . . . See what I'm saying? It's time, A, to get involved and make a difference in somebody else's life. Church will become what it's meant to be then, a challenging, exciting, thriving community of believers making a difference.

I believe in you.
