T. Suzanne Eller Dear Suzie?

There's a girl in my youth group that is a total hypocrite. I go to church because I have to go, but I'm not living a lie. Everyone that knows me knows where I stand. Why are there so many hypocrites in the church? Blake

Dear Blake,

This is a tough question that has no easy answers. Without knowing the girl, I can't explain to you why she steps up as a Christian at church and fails elsewhere.

What I can say is that every church has hyprocrites, Blake. Some come to church because it's socially beneficial. Others come because it makes them feel better about the mistakes they've made. Some come because they truly are hungry for God, but they live in limbo, hanging on to one life and yet wanting another.

I wouldn't want them to be anywhere else but in church. I pray that one day they will hear something in a sermon or sense the power of God through worship, and that they'll decide to take the plunge and live for God with everything they have within them.

Every crowd that circled Jesus contained a mixture of people: seekers, mockers, the hungry, the hurting, the sick, the educated, the poor, the despised, the respected. They all came for the same reason: to see this man, Jesus, and to hear what he had to say.

It's not much different today. A church is a blended mix of all kinds of people, kind of like a family. Do you know of someone in the youth group who loves God with all of his heart? Has your youth pastor ever gone way out of his way to let you know that he cared? What about the little old lady on the back pew that has served God for 70 years? Take a moment. Study others in your church family and I bet that you'll find a whole group of people who live what they believe. I hope their lives encourage you.

Thanks, Blake, for such an honest question.
