Lee Warren Culture Watch:
A Time to Fight

by Lee Warren (Lee's bio)

On September 19, 2002, I listened to my beloved Kansas City Royals playing a rather meaningless baseball game. They have no chance of making the playoffs, but I'm a die-hard fan, so I listen anyway. The last thing I expected to hear about that night was a father and his son jumping out of the stands and running onto the field to mercilessly attack Tom Gamboa, the Royals first base coach.

They struck Gamboa from behind, knocking him to the ground. Lying on the ground, he tried to kick his attackers away. But he didn't need to worry about it for long. The entire Royal dugout spilled onto the field to defend Gamboa. Watching the video of the attack the next day made me proud of the men who play for the Royals.

Today, men are afraid to be men. For the better part of forty years we've allowed feminists to define the proper role of men. Feminists have said that men are too wild and immature. They are too eager to fight. Too stupid and inept to run a family. In fact, feminists don't even believe that men have the right to be called the head of the household.

Thankfully, God defines roles, not his detractors. Seeing the Royals jump into battle so quickly to aid an innocent man being attacked gives me hope. Granted, Gamboa was “one of them,” but the Royals didn't have time to contemplate whether their actions would be seen as chest-beating or actions of just men. Instinctively, they knew the proper action to take: fight off the attackers and protect an innocent victim.

Untempered, untrained men do tend to lack control. And of course, fighting isn't always the answer. But sometimes it is. Look at the wars that Israel fought. Sometimes they were provoked by their enemies, sometimes they foolishly attacked countries for prideful or other sinful reasons and sometimes they were led into battle by God himself as they claimed the land he promised them. Likewise, today's man needs to (re)claim the role God has given us; to lead, to protect, to serve humbly, to provide for our families, to defend our country and to love our wives and family sacrificially.

Israel ruffled feathers as they began their pursuit of Canaan. Men will do the same thing amongst the left in our culture, but we can hardly expect to engage a culture that wants to see men tamed and feminized without a fight. If the terms of war are being shouted down and impugned by the left, then the question is, are men willing to accept the terms and respond instinctively (like the Royals did) or will we shy away for fear of being labeled a “male-chauvinist” or even worse, a “patriarch” (a word stripped of it's meaning in the past few decades)? The order of our society, churches and families depends upon our response.
