Louise Bergmann DuMont Coffee And... Visits With Him
by Louise Bergmann DuMont (Louise's bio)

Drinking coffee just isn't what it used to be. When our grandmothers served coffee, the cups were made of bone china with delicate hand painted roses gaily draped around their gold rimmed edges. There was an art to the social grace of joining a friend for coffee.

Now, on most mornings, coffee is swigged from a plastic travel mug while we battle the commuter highway. It can be sipped from a paper cup that is too hot to hold, but not thick enough to keep the coffee warm or it can be chugged from a cold-rinsed mug left to sit on our desk too long.

One thing has not changed. Coffee is still the jumper cable used to recharge humanity's low battery. The cup we grab at the Jiffy-Mart fills us with high-test caffeine and sends us into our day with a quicker step. Its intent is to refill the well of energy needed to perform the day's tasks.

The coffee our grandmothers sipped was also intended to recharge – only it was friendships and human spirits that were freshened-up in the parlor. Young mothers looked for respite from the demands of children, new wives sought a feminine note of understanding, while more mature women craved a break from the monotony of household chores.

Today's college crowd is returning to that era of coffee use. They understand its function goes deeper than a caffeine-kick. They've created Cafés and CoffeeHouses where the purpose of gathering is to relish rich concoctions, vigorously exchange innovative ideas, and encourage companionship. Like their grandmothers, these young people seek to refuel their soul as well as their physical energy.

As a Christian I want to be as eager to replenish my spiritual strength as I am to revive my physical and emotional state. A few sips from the gospel on a Sunday morning are not enough. I want to take long leisurely vacations with my Lord. I want to revel in His company and allow the essence of His presence to remain on my tongue long after we part. I want God's very existence to make my heart skip a beat, like the heart of a girl who just tasted her first kiss.

God loves us and thoroughly enjoys our visits. Perhaps our appointments should be more frequent.

The Lord, your God, is in your midst… he will rejoice over you with gladness, he will renew you in his love.
Zephaniah 3:17
