Coffee And... by Louise Bergmann DuMont (Louise's bio) Send this page to a friend Every time I see the words "Coffee and " my spirit flutters with anticipation. Our church like many other congregations gathers before worship once a month for a time of fellowship. Everyone knows there will be plenty of coffee, but what else will they serve? The prior week's bulletin grandly announces that "Coffee and " will be served on the first Sunday of the next month. "And what?" everyone wonders. Will there be toasted bagels with hearty flavored cream cheese this month? Will yeast donuts filled with sweet strawberry jam tempt our palate? Or will the lovely ladies in charge serve up miniature muffins and delicate butter pastries? The anticipation is almost as good as treat itself. God orders our lives in much the same way. We know about the coffee, those unchanging everyday parts of life. We eat, we sleep, we work, we play - but what about the little surprises that God has set aside for us? Volunteers often work tirelessly at their tasks for long periods of time. The deep satisfaction they receive is like a good cup of strong hot coffee. But our God is not without a generous nature. He usually provides a liberal dose of the "and " at just the right moment. It enriches the solid flavor of the coffee and our lives. It might come in the form of a child who throws her arms around the volunteer's knees and shouts, "I love your stories!" or a teen who is observed stepping out in faith following the example set by their mentor. God has a special "and " waiting for us in heaven too. He has revealed through His Word part of what we can expect when we as believers sit in His presence, but there will be so much more waiting for us. The Bible tells us we will have healthy bodies for His service, strong voices to praise His name and spirits full of joy. We will live in mansions prepared especially for us and our surroundings will be so beautiful that the only analogies the writer could conceive were those of solid gold, sparkling crystals and magnificently cut jewels. But the news keeps getting better. All the things I've just described are only the coffee. I can not even imagine the blessing that will come when the Father opens His doors and we see the special table He has prepared for us "Now we see but a poor reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know In part; then I shall know fully " I Corinthians 13:12 The next time you feel as if life has become a bit too everyday, look for God's "and" and remember how much He loves you.
