”Out of the Ruins” is a suspense mystery not to be missed.  Meet murder victim Hannah Hill who is no ordinary widow. She is called “a benevolent spider…watchin' the world from the centuh of her web.” No matter that she lay bedridden from the effects of Multiple Sclerosis. Hannah's knack for recording snippets of other people's lives connected her to everyone that set foot on Cumberland Island, friends and family alike.  Is this the key to the mysterious figure she witnessed in her room one night? What did she know? Was it enough to lead to her murder?

Mystery enthusiasts will enjoy the suspenseful array of suspects as well as the provocative clues offered in the third of Sally Wright's Ben Reese novels, “Out of the Ruins.” Enhancing the mystery is the vivid portrayal of Cumberland, a barrier island which is just off the coast of Georgia. The reader will fairly taste the salty air, touch the lush greenery and recall as though a personal experience the priceless moments when the wild things of Cumberland cross paths with people.

Ben Reese, the philosophical archivist and friend of Hannah pledges to help her as best he can in the battle to save Cumberland from developers and the national park service. Soon after her death, however, Ben finds a trail of clues that draws him to a different focus. Although sleuthing is not his profession he navigates with grace and forthrightness a maze of Cumberland history laden with secrets, feuds and brewing bitterness.

Sally Wright masterfully combines her gift of creating an alluring mystery with her ability to convey a deep and lasting message. This is not 'fluff' but a story with depth.  It touches many of today's relevant topics such as euthanasia, wildlife preservation and the value of generations gone by. An enduring theme of the value of people runs through this novel. It not only creates a good story but gives the reader something to tuck away in their heart.

“Out of the Ruins” is available in bookstores now. Look for it along with Sally Wright's three earlier Ben Reese novels and find yourself a gold mine of reading pleasure.
