Quinlin's Estate
David Ryan Long
Bethany House

Paperback. 389 pages.
ISBN: 0764226622

Review by Louise Bergmann DuMont (Read Louise's bio)

In an effort save the historic Quinlin Estate from destruction, Eve Lawson gathers about her an eclectic band of like-minded individuals. At times, the task before them appears daunting. The literal maze built at the center of the estate suddenly seems a straightforward path compared to the twisted tales and bent secrets of those who hold the estate's future in their hands. Leaving her doctorate program and taking a job with the local paper, Eve researches the town of Lowerton's history looking for a brighter future. She soon discovers, however, that in searching for answers to save the estate she may have uncovered things better left hidden. She and those she has come to love must face dark and disturbing evidence.

But Eve is a fighter. Giving up doesn't come easily to her. Born in the Little Pines Trailer Park, on the wrong side of town, she knows the realities of life. Will determination be enough to win this fight and produce good out of evil?

Written in the form of a journal, the author of Quinlin's Estate, David Ryan Long, draws the reader toward the worthy people of Lowerton by gradually unfolding the devious past of other town members. In the same way that dark threads draw the eye to bright colors in a fine tapestry this author shows how positive people can thrive and influence others through even the bleakest situations. In her journal, Eve Lawson documents both her factual discoveries and her deepest emotions. This form works well for the author and I found the book to be a fascinating journey into the heart of a town on the brink of change. Quinlin's Estate (published by Bethany House) skillfully depicts the complex tales that often grow out of life's battles between good and evil. It is a worthy read.
