Every Good Gift: Sufficient Grace in Time of Need Linda Baker Kaahanui Christian Literature Crusade Paperback. 124 pages ISBN: 0875086357 Review by T. Suzanne Eller (Read Suzie's bio) Send this page to a friend Linda Baker Kaahanui and her mother traveled deep into the heart of China on a pilgrimage to share the stories of modern day heroes of faith. "Every Good Gift" tells the story of Bright Moon, Li Shan, Mei-Ling and others who live like those in the New Testament, paying a heavy price to embrace the Christian faith. Bright Moon lived in a concentration camp until she was 50 because of her faith. Mei-Ling, an educated women with a bright future lived in the basement of a bleak hospital basement and cleaned toilets, rather than deny her faith. She was beaten unmercifully in front of 2,000 of her contemporaries, yet even as she lay in her own blood, she would not recant her love for Christ. "Every Good Gift" also shares contemporary miracles like the story of Shao Lan, a young girl who could not eat and lay motionless in her bed for over a year, and how she tried to take her life to ease her pain. In desperation her servant paid a local sorceress all that she had, but it was the renewed faith of her mother that set her daughter free. Linda Baker Kaahanui is the great-granddaughter of H.A. Baker, the renowned missionary to China in the early 1900's who ministered to the "tin mine" children and author of the book, "Visions Beyond the Veil". Her parents were both raised as missionaries in China and ministered in the mid 1900's. Therefore it is no surprise that "Every Good Gift" is written with insight, history, and detail that could only come from an intimate knowledge of the plight and heartbeat of the Chinese Christians Reading this book is a humbling journey. In a society where persecution is little understood, the stories of Christians who live what we could only imagine challenged me to reexamine my definition of Christianity and to understand what Christ meant when he asked his disciples to "carry the cross". "Every Good Gift" is a fascinating and thought-provoking book. It is a must-read and should be shared in churches, at family devotions, and read by every Christian who hungers to grasp what it means to follow Christ. Copyright 2002, T. Suzanne Eller.
