Tyro Jacqueline Zilliox Publish America Paperback. 103 pages. ISBN: 1-59129-026-0 Review by Kristenea M. LaVelle (Read Kristenea's bio) Send this page to a friend The kingdom of Arcane exists in a state of complete darkness while its subjects are imprisoned and forced to labor for the vast army of dark knights that ride through villages intimidating and pillaging precious food supplies. Meanwhile, 12-year old "Tyro" is sent from the kingdom of Luminaire, where he leaves behind his royal position to venture into the darkness of Arcane with a special invitation for all who cross his path. Interestingly enough, the young soldier wears a protective armor that radiates light, thus drawing attention to himself amidst the devastating darkness of Arcane. Those who accept Tyro's invitation to live in the "kingdom of Light" also find themselves wearing this protective armor of light. Word quickly spreads throughout the kingdom of Arcane as small bands of "light soldiers" begin popping up everywhere. This arouses the suspicion of the ruling authorities and Tyro soon finds himself face to face with Anon, the ruler of Arcane Though targeting youth ages 9-13, this book is an enjoyable read for any age as the author is proficient in describing spiritual truths with beautiful word illustrations. This well thought out story is powerful because it addresses issues such as the significance of our "spiritual armor" and "spreading the gospel message" in easy to understand language. This is uplifting and encouraging for those of the Christian faith and certainly a "draw" for those who would seek the "armor of light". Zilliox is able to take spiritual truths in very literal terms and weave them into a wonderful, thought provoking story that centers around the Biblical principles that Christians enjoy, while still allowing enough room for God to speak to the individual reader in a special way. The message of "Tyro" can be easily applied to our modern world as we don our "spiritual armor" and spread the gospel message, much like the hero in this fascinating tale. If you find yourself searching for an interesting read, or you are looking for a good book for your children, then consider "Tyro". You will have a wonderful time discussing the symbolism and Christian principles that are presented in this story. Copyright 2002, Kristenea M. LaVelle. All Rights reserved. Used with permission.
