The Reality Within The Matrix

Movie audiences were enthralled by the film The Matrix, starring Keanu Reeves, Laurence Fishburne and Carrie-Anne Moss. This action sci-fi thriller surprisingly caused quite a stir among some Christians. I remember a few Christian friends sharing how much they loved The Matrix. I thought perhaps they were talking about some Christian film I never heard of with a similar title, but they meant the Keanu Reeves film.
I couldn't understand why so many Christians seemed interested in this secular film until I heard about how much Christian symbolism the film portayed. Everything from the rebel city named Zion to the rebel ship Nebuchadnezzar.
Author Kristenea M. LaVelle goes one step further in her book The Reality Within The Matrix. LaVelle's book expertly points out dozens of Christian symbols in the film, such as baptism and Christ's death and resurrection. The author has really done her homework finding symbolism in even seemingly small parts of the film.
If the author wanted to just point out the Christian symbolism in The Matrix, she did a good job. LaVelle doesn't just leave it at that though. Throughout the book, she shows us numerous ways we can grow in our Christian walk by using the film's symbolism as a starting point for her discussion. At the end of each chapter, the author gives an "invitation to apply the message" with a short list of application points.
LaVelle's book The Reality Within The Matrix provides a fascinating look into the world of the Matrix. If nothing else, the book will make you think. Like Morpheus in the film though, the author can show us the door but we have to walk through it.
